What are the different kinds of boat motors?

There are four different types of boat motors:

  • Jet
  • Inboard/outboard (I/O, or stern drive)
  • Inboard
  • Outboard motors

Jet motors use a pump to suck water in, and then forces it out, causing the boat to move.  I/O and inboard engines are similar to each other, but I/Os use an outboard drive unit that pivots with a turn of the steering wheel, while inboards have fixed position propellers and are steered by the use of a rudder.  Per pound of weight, outboard motors have more power than inboards.

How Do I Choose an Outboard Motor?

Looking for a used Yamaha outboard motors for sale can be a challenge. There are so many different questions that need answering. Do you want a two-stroke or a four-stroke? What kind of prop? Is bigger better?

Let's take the two-stroke outboard versus the four-stroke outboard. Traditional two-stroke engines burn a mix of gas and oil. Four-stroke engines are much like your automobile, and the oil and gas do not mix but have separate systems for the oil and gas.

Two-stroke motors have evolved, they are now quieter, and more fuel-efficient than ever. One of the biggest myths today about two-stroke engines is they are smelly, noisy and energy inefficient. That isn't the case anymore. The differences between the two different types of engines are diminishing. When asked, though, most boaters prefer the four-stroke engine.

It is better to go with the boat manufacturers maximum power rating for a motor, (this information can be found on your inspection plate).  If you go with a bigger engine, your boat will perform better, and you will be happier. More power and speed will allow you to get out of the way of approaching storms quicker.

Your props condition can be more important than the type of propeller because a damaged prop can destroy the motor that spins it through vibration. As far as materials go, stainless steel-propellers are five times as strong as aluminum and run truest.

How Do I Service My Outboard Motor?

Experts agree your outboard motor needs to be serviced by professionals in a shop that specializes in outboard motors.  Once a year if you don't work your engine hard and use it very little. If you use your motor regularly and run it a lot, you should have it serviced about every three months. Maintaining a regular maintenance schedule will help keep it running optimally and extend the life of your outboard motor.

It is essential to know what you are buying and how it was maintained. A little homework can save you headaches later. With a bit of extra effort, you can be comfortable with your decision of motor.
